With the 27. 5 AM LTD Carbon XD Driver Wheelset, we've partnered with Reynolds to hand pick several new innovations that we think are going to stand the test of time. From the one-by SRAM XD Driver body to the mid-sized, 27. 5in diameter, we're confident that these are the wheels of the future. We're well familiar with the stiff mettle of Reynolds' 27. 5 AM rims from personal experience, so they were the obvious choice as a canvas for our arts-and-crafts impulses. There's a reason why other wheel manufacturers focus on making hubs and just lace them to re-branded Reynolds rims: the Utah-based company has already all but perfected the science of the mid-sized wheel. Since carbon rims are stiff enough that the difference between Boost and 142/100mm axles is far less notable than with alloy rims, the 27. 5 AM LTDs go some way toward erasing Boost envy without forcing us to shell-out for a new race frame. The fact that Reynolds uses DT hub internals also contributed to our decision, but we've opted for the DT logo instead of the usual Reynolds re-branding to give the wheels more of a custom-built look. Finally, we admit to the occasional streak of vanity, and the half-and-half color of the wheels' Reynolds label is our way of visually representing a proper all-mountain bike's ability to straddle climbing and descending. With advances in suspension design technology, we're starting to see more and more 29ers with surprising low travel that are capable of tackling terrain we would have reserved for five or even six-inch bikes just a few years ago. In the 29 Trail LTD Carbon XD Driver Wheelset, we've partnered with Reynolds to produce a wheelset that -- in our ever humble opinion -- gives those capable 29er frames a platform that's stiff and responsive enough to let them shine to their fullest potential. Even when this wheelset was still just a figment of our daydream imaginations, we knew we'd have to go with Reynolds' 29 Trail rims. There's a reason why other wheel manufacturers focus on making hubs and just lace them to re-branded Reynolds rims: the Utah-based company has already built a virtually perfect XC race hoop. Since carbon rims are stiff enough that the difference between Boost and 142/100mm axles is far less notable than with alloy rims, the 29 Trail LTDs bring our present XC race frames up to snuff, stiffness-wise. The hubs that Reynolds typically uses are already essentially rebranded DT Swiss models, but we opted to keep the DT logo, giving the wheel more of a custom-built look, and we've outfitted the rear hub with a SRAM XD Driver body for all you one-by 29er fetishists. Finally, we admit to the occasional streak of vanity, and the half-and-half color of the wheels' Reynolds label is our way of visually representing the versatility of today's 29ers. Those new suspension designs and innovative frame geometries we mention above have obliterated the old stereotypes of wagon wheels being for fire roads and ribbon-smooth singletrack only. Toward this end, the wheels have an ideal profile for 2. 25in tires for confidence through berms and gnarly lines, but they still excel as worm-burning climbers courtesy of carbon fiber's inherent stiffness and low rotational mass.

Reynolds The Dean Fat Bike Wheelset Black, 15x135/12x197mm TA - XD

At the 2016 edition of fat bike worlds, Reynold's new academic headman put on a masterclass of low-weight fatness. The Dean Fat Bike Wheelset brought the eventual winner's bike weight down to a claimed 27lbs, shedding around 3lbs at the wheels alone. The Dean achieves this outsized weight loss by substituting carbon fiber for the usual alloy and eliminating bead hooks and tubes. While we're sure that the rider -- Hincapie Racing's Squire, who has produced some impressive performances in some of the Western Hemisphere's biggest races -- had something to do with the win, dropping so many grams of rotational mass at the rims surely played a role. While switching to carbon and shedding the extra material required for bead hooks obviously has an effect on weight, the real source of fat bike fatness lies in the tubes. Despite the optimistic claims some manufacturers make for lightweight fat bike tubes, our own digital scale has registered weights upwards of 550g. That's almost 1-1/4lbs per tube, which doubles up on a complete bike unless you're riding a fat unicycle. When combined with the claimed weight savings of 460g compared to alloy fat wheels, we calculate that Reynold's claimed weigh loss of 3lbs is refreshingly modest, putting that number closer to 3-1/2. Despite its relative svelteness, The Dean is still built on the blueprint of Reynolds' Mountain Rim 5 (MR5) carbon lay-up schedule, which distributes different stripes of carbon, resin, and epoxy in a strategic landscape meant to preserve durability in high-impact areas while reducing weight wherever possible. Reynolds 72 Aero Carbon Wheelset - Tubular Black, Shimano

The aerodynamic benefits of the Reynolds 72 Aero Carbon Wheelset are obvious, just by looking at it. When you consider that it was also designed by none other than Paul Lew, Mr. Aero himself, then you also start to make assumptions about the benefits derived from what you're not able to see, the subtle tweaks that Reynolds applies to ye olde aerodynamic theory to make what it calls the fastest wheels on the planet. The key to achieving this distinction is what the Utah-based manufacturer calls Dispersive Effect Termination (DET) . DET Begins at the rim bed with a maximum width of 26. 2mm, which brings the rim up to the tire's width and creates a generous cradle to glue it to. There are myriad benefits to this design, included reduced turbulence, which causes drag, and increased lateral rigidity and comfort. The rim's deep dish is shaped in a NACA-profiled, tapered V-shape that ends with a sharp trailing edge. The Aero's shape smooths airflow over the wheel, and when that air passes the spoke face, it's easily reattached at the rear of the rim to reduce stall. DET also means that this stall-free sweet spot extends to 20 degrees of yaw -- a full 7. 5 degrees more than the competition. It's rare to have a real-world circumstance of a straight-on head wind. In reality, you spend 95% of your riding time between 0 and 20 degrees of yaw with a wind angle anywhere from 0 to 100 degrees in relation to the bearing. A lot of deep rims in this situation act as sails, pulling the bike sideways during sudden changes of direction in windy conditions -- an effect that's far more noticeable when the rims get over 50 millimeters deep. You're choosing a deep rim because you want the aerodynamic benefits, but poor handling can make any speed gain come to nothing if you're thrown off the road or into another cyclist by sudden gusts.
